Thanks, Jason, for the response. We're on the same page regarding preaching and small groups not being an either/or option. I thought I'd point out that there's something missing from your Acts reference. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. In addition to these other vital things that we talk about (preaching/small groups/fellowship, etc.) we can't afford to leave out the one thing that gives them all power - an attention to prayer.

For the rest of you reading, I'd suggest you check out Jason's youth ministry blog jasonhuffmanministries.blogspot.com.

I agree that preaching is important, and would have to say it probably in some ways is more important than small groups. However, when I read the book of Acts and look at the early church (particularly Chapter 2), I see where they are devoted to the apostle's teaching, to the breaking of bread and to the fellowship of believers. I feel preaching and small groups are not an either/or, but rather a both/and. Yes, they need sound preaching of the word, but they also need relationships with other believers and a place where they can digest and chew on the principles of biblical teaching with other believers. At our youth program, we have Wednesday nights which are more of a preaching/teaching (yes, I do both) and Sunday nights for guys/girls small groups to develop godly relationships and depth. Good post.

I agree with you, as if you doubted that. The part that spoke to me the most was the section on kerysso, I think that is where I struggle the most. I'm a good teacher who, partly thanks to you, understands the deep and serious need for preaching. kerysso is probably where I am lacking the most and it's good to be able to articluate that and also to be able to organize that in my thought process.
